2005 Awards
Barb Breen Memorial Parent Educator Award
On October 27, 2003, Wisconsin advocates and families of children with
disabilities lost a good friend and mentor. Barb Breen, co-director of
the Wisconsin Statewide Parent-Educator Initiative (WSPEI), died
suddenly at her home in Eau Claire. In an attempt to honor Barb’s
memory and to establish an enduring legacy, some of her colleagues and
friends are establishing an award in her name. The Barb Breen Memorial
Parent Educator Award will be given each year to a CESA or school
district parent liaison in Wisconsin who best exemplifies Barb’s work
ethic and personal characteristics. This award will be given at the
annual Circles of Life conference each spring. Lauri Malnory was the
recipient of the inaugural award in 2004. Wisconsin special education
directors, parent liaisons, advocates, and parents are encouraged to
nominate a parent liaison for this award. The selection criteria are:
• Dedication and commitment to parent/family empowerment principles.
• Success in fostering parent advocacy and empowerment.
• Service as a tireless advocate on behalf of children with
disabilities and their families.
• A collaborative spirit that encourages mutual problem solving.
Nominations may be sent to: Elsie Shaw Parent Scholarship Fund, 4230
East Towne Blvd #242, Madison, WI 53704-3704 and must be received no

Elsie Shaw Foundation Awards
The Elliott Shaw Award
The Elliott Shaw Award is given in recognition and honor of a group or
professional
who has gone the extra mile to provide quality services and programs
for people with
developmental and related disabilities and their families. Award
selection will be based
on the individual’s performance above and beyond the requirements of
their employment. In the spring of 2000 Elliott Shaw (Barry’s brother and son of Elsie)
passed away from
cancer. In addition to the Elliot Shaw award, a scholarship has been
created in his name. This specific pot of money is to go to
families where there is an occurrence of cancer, and the family wishes
to attend the conference. Money for this scholarship is donated by the
Shaw family on an annual basis (brothers Richard and Barry and
Elliott’s wife Teresa). In his memory the Elliott Shaw Distinguished
Professional Award was established.
The Kasidhe Olson Award

The Kasidhe Olson Award is given in recognition and honor of a parent
who has made outstanding efforts and given of them to enrich the lives
of all families of children with
disabilities across Wisconsin. It was started
in memory of Kasidhe Olson, daughter of Nancy and Wally Olson and
sister of Nick
Olson and Ryan Backes. In
addition to the award, a new fund was established called the Kasidhe
fund. Since Kasidhe was a special needs adoption
child, this fund is used for parents who have an adopted child and
wish to attend the conference. In her
memory the Kasihe Olson Distinguished Parent Award was established.
To
nominate an individual for either the Elliott Shaw Award of the
Kasidhe Olson Award, please download and complete the
